Macromedia looking to compete with Sun in the mobile phone game market

Story added: 19 Jul 2004 20:54. Last updated: 06 Sep 2004 21:56.

While the global on-line game market continues to surge with the popular PS2 and Xbox game consoles, Sun Microsystems and Macromedia both see the potential for large growth in the embedded mobile phone game market this year.

Sun has forecast that shipments of mobile phones with built-in Java games will likely reach 350 million units this year, with production value estimated at $3 billion. The company will soon complete development of new Java applications for use in 3G (third-generation) phones, Sun indicated.

Macromedia began marketing its embedded Flash product in phones last month when it launched Flash Lite 1.1 in at the end of June. According to company senior director of mobile and devices, Anup Murarka, Flash is more suitable than Java for a variety of display sizes and resolutions, for companies with smaller memory requirements, shorter development schedules, the need for lower costs and cross-platform compatibility.
