Fun, funny and addictive.

Every once in a while we get a game in that doesn't fit into any of our categories. It's not a casual game, an action game or even a sports game. Sola Rola it's good enough that maybe we need to invent a new category for it. I guess we could call it a blob rolling and jumping game. Hey, that's catchy.

The game certainly falls into the fun genre. There are two blobby brothers who are cavorting through space and get mixed up in a rescue attempt which leads to a series of adventures. However the basic premise of the game is still rolling and jumping. What's really great about the game is that the physics of the rolling and jumping is beautifully done and the developers have managed to add that feeling of weight and control that we've only seen in a few other games.

You play the part of the larger blob (they are called Wiz and Waz and I forget which one is which) and you have to roll around levels jumping over obstacles. It sounds a lot simpler than it is. The levels start off fairly simple but then get increasingly harder and soon you 'll find yourself swinging through the air and manipulating bombs to blow things up.

The graphics are very simply done, but again done really really well. The use of colours is great and the backgrounds are really well thought out. They've almost got a South Park esque feel about them, and they are certainly eye catching. I guess the best aspect about the graphics though, is that the screen tilts as you are rolling which really gives you a sense of movement. The sound has also not been ignored with some nice sound effects coupled with really well put together tunes.

Controls are also deceptively simple. Just press left and right to get your blob moving and press up or 5 or the main button to jump. That's all there is to it, but being able to have tight control over Wiz or Waz will take a bit more time. Once you start rolling inertia will take over and you will have to be quite careful with what's in front of you. For the later levels, close control is definitely required, but the learning curve is pretty decent.

As mentioned before, the game is a LOT of fun to play. Not just for the graphics or the really innovative physics in the game, but it's actually funny. The developers have put quite a lot of thought into keeping you entertained between levels, and the plot is both interesting and amusing. There are a number of jokes which had me chortling on the train, right from the start where the two blobs find out that Ping the Unmerciless (wherever did they get that name from :) has locked up the guardians of the galaxy in the four corners of the universe and they question the fact that the universe has corners!

Longevity is also something that the game has because while the levels are fairly short in length, there are 25 of them and many will take you a fair while to crack. It's one of those games where you spend a few goes learning the level and often get agonisingly close before you actually crack it. So it's a safe bet that apart from tearing your hair out the game will have you coming back for more. Oh, and here's a tip on that which has worked for me. Shave your head, it's less painful.

The only slight reservations I have about the game is the fact that on some levels it's very easy to die and restarting will become a bit too annoying and on other levels it's not always obvious to figure out what you have to do. Still, those, and the fact that the exit option is very close to the reset options are my only drawbacks on what is a great game.

It's innovative, addictive and keeps you entertained for hours, highly recommended.
