Add the letters 'u' and 'n' to the title of this game and what have you got. And no, it's not wantedun.


I Wanted to like this game, in the same way I Wanted to like the film. James McAvoy is a great actor, Angelina has a great ass and there was Matrix stylee action. But something just didn't gel together in the film (Loom of Fate? Come on. And this is coming from a comic book fan. If they had made an actual full adaptation of the comic, then we would be talking) and it certainly didn't gel together in the game.

In case you didn't know, Wanted is based on the hit movie where unknown nobody Wesley Gibson is plucked to discover his true heritage, gain super powers and become a world class assassin.

It's been a while since the last Gameloft run and shoot and flip around actioner and I think Iplay have tried to fill the void. Wanted certainly has a lot of nice running and acrobatics in it. It also has lots of shooting and killing in it. But essentially Iplay have made everything a bit too easy.

The game follows the plot of the film and you're recruited pretty soon to hone your skills. I say hone, the first level starts off pretty instantly with you getting attacked from different directions and you have to shoot your assailants by pressing the right button number before you paraglide to safety. The action in the game isn't particularly complet, you just have to run from left to right for most of the time, pressing the action button intermittently to shoot or knife people. There are plenty of places where you have to jump and roll as well to get to where you want to go.

Then there are the levels later on where you are constantly running and you have to time your jumps and rolls. Again, there's not a lot of skill required to do this as long as you know where everything is. This will involve you dying quite a lot to memorise the level and it can be quite annoying after a while. One of the later levels involved scaling a wrecked train and it was pretty confusing, even for me, due to all the checkpoints and level areas looking the same. You can't tell if you've gone the right way or died and started again. Even if you die, you still usually restart the level where you left off and with full health. And speaking of health, after a few seconds it will quickly begin to replenish itself.

There are some levels where you have to master the bullet bending technique and in this I will give some props to Iplay for coming up with some way of doing it on a mobile. They've opted for numeric sequence presses, based on where your opponent is. If they are on the same level as you, pressing the corresponding number quickly will result in a kill. I.e. 4 or 6 depending on whether they are left or right. But if they are above or below you, then you have to press and hold the right number, i.e. 1, 3, 7 and 9 to get the bullet to bend around and hit them.

The problem is that in these areas there are usually too many enemies too quickly for you to really notice the effort they've put into making the bullets bend. A bit reminiscent of the film actually. As the game progresses Wesley has to do all the things he did in the film, and the distinctly 2D graphics didn't help much, especially making Angelina a red head. The title screen looks great but then you get to the gameplay and you feel like the game could have been a few years old. The one thing I did like about it was the fact that the graphics had a great comic book feel to them. Sound as well wasn't brilliant, although there were some gunshot sounds and some very weird elevator music.

There were also plenty of rats in the game. If you haven't seen the film I won't say anything, but suffice it to say the ability to use rats was not something I saw any point of in the game at all, apart from one level that seemed to stray quite a bit from the film. I never used them otherwise. Each level also allows you to collect a golden rat if you can find if so that your name appears on the awards. Whoop dee doo. A nice idea if you had been able to replay individual levels again to get the rats you never found. But you can't, you have to start from the beginning.

Not that it will take you that long to finish, an hour and a half later and I Wanted to believe there was more to it than that. But there wasn't and the only thing you could do was play through the game again. There are some levels where you have to figure out which sequence to press switches in but this is never hard. Other levels where you have to memorise the level layout as you are constantly running. But this isn't too hard either. Even the latter levels didn't prove too difficult at all, especially as there was a little trick to allow you to clock them easily (see our hints section).

Overall I Wanted a lot more. I Wanted some really cool and complex action that I had to think about and required skill. I Wanted state of the art graphics and sound. I wanted to play through the game thinking that was a brilliant experience. But we don't always get what we want.
