Anannya Sen’s Review

Review Date: 29/11/04

A nicely presented and quite fun shoot em up styled in the grand old tradition of shoot em ups.

Ok, I'm the first person to admit that I'm not a shoot em up player. I enjoy them and used to play Xenon and R-Type way back when, but I'm no master. For that you have to go to Goodge Street Arcade, pop downstairs and ask to see Mills play. Then sit / stand back and watch in disbelief as the man with reactions faster than a computer clocks every shoot em up in there with ease.

The object is to fight an evil army commander and free a scientific doctor, but this is a classic shoot em up game.

The graphics are quite bold and nicely presented like all shoot em ups, with a metal slug cartoony style for the ships. Bright colours, lots of bullets and power ups that look good. The enemy ships and end of level bosses are cool.

There is again no sound. I'm fed up of ranting about the lack of sound in most mobile games for phones with polyphonic capabilities!

The controls are really straighforward, use the directional or key pad to fly and the 5 button shoots your mega weapon. The ships auto fire so you don't have to worry about that. You can also move your ships diagonally which is helpful.

The playability is pretty good. The game is fun to play with a classic feel. Each ship has different characteristics and there are lots of power ups. In addition to the lives you have, there is also fuel to consider and the power ups don't just include weapon upgrades, but fuel and repair upgrades as well. That said, the game is hard and the end of level bosses are pretty tough to beat.

The lastability is average as there is no save option and the game doesn't autosuspend. That means you have to try and play through in one sitting and while it plays really well, the game is really hard.
