Some Boddy has been killed but by whom?


Clue, Cluedo, call it what you like (or what your trademark will allow you) has been around for years as a board game, film, TV show and even a mobile game a few years back. Now it's time for the glitz and glam of the iPhone version. Glitz and glam is exactly what you get. The overall style and theme to the package is very film noir and you almost wish for a black and white option instead of the detailed colour backgrounds.

Rather than being a port of the multiplayer board game, the iPhone version places you as a reporter on the rise where you have to solve a number of crimes which all unfortunately centre on the murder of Boddy by one of his friends. That's one dinner party I don't want to be invited to. There are 12 different levels and they do involve 12 different Boddy murders and scenarios. As you progress, the possibilities of who done it, where and with what increase as more rooms and suspects are implicated.

The game mechanic is very straight forward. All the levels follow the same format, question each suspect to pick up clues and search appropriate items and this will usually reveal a few more leading questions to ask the suspects. There’s no sidekick to help you (although the news editor can chip in if you ask) but you do have a crime map and suspicions section for you to put your thoughts down. There is a virtual time pressure which doesn’t allow for many mistakes. Depending on the complexity of the case you will have up to 90 virtual minutes to solve the murder. In reality you can take as long as you like to think about the clues and study your notes. However, every question you ask and every move around the house knocks a few minutes of the clock. If you follow the process methodically and logically, you should make steady progress through the game.

The game is great fun to play even after the 15th murder. The graphics are very nicely put together and you can tilt around the room to inspect for clues. The rest of the game is all touch and swipe and the tutorial quickly gives you the lowdown on all the buttons.

Once you’ve finished all the levels and unlocked all the achievements, nothing happens. It’s a bit of a shame as I was hoping for something special – maybe the editor to be the murderer or a double murder twist in a bonus level. As the game will keep reminding you, repeating a level may have the same suspects and objects but the scenarios are different and there will be a different murderer. There is some replay here and hopefully any update might give a few more levels (although I’m not sure of any EA game being significantly updated post release)
