Costas Stephanides’s Review

A great game for that quick rally fix.

I don't know if I'm getting old and I'm losing my gaming skills but every game I have played lately has been tough. 4x4 Extreme Rally is no exception.

There is a difficult Championship mode together with a great practice mode. There are 9 courses in total which thankfully are all unlocked from the start. My advice; practice, practice and then practice some more.

The races are great fun to play and consist of a short one lap time trial. The courses are full of twists and turns and the skill is all about find the best racing line and taking the bends as tight as you can, usually going off the track to nick a few milliseconds. To complete the Championship you have to come first in each of the races. If you do not manage to win, you will have to replay the level until you do. Luckily the game does auto-save so there should be no problem if you need to replay the same level.

The graphics are ok, nothing too special. The game is played in an overhead view and while there is no map, you can see enough of the course to plan your route. The courses are quite varied and there are desert tracks and gravel roads.

The controls are very simple. The car auto accelerates so you only need to worry with steering left and right; you can also press 5 to brake. The car is very responsive and is actually a joy to drive.

There are other rally games out there, notably Colin McRae Rally 2005, which try to emulate their PS2 brother. If you are looking for a quick driving game with all the skids you could hope for then 4x4 Extreme Rally is not a bad investment.
