An updated version of Pong with similar playability

Mobility Games is fast becoming the new Microforum. The games of theirs I have played so far have been Commodore 64 esque. And this is no exception.

The graphics are fairly dismal. The initial graphics of the players when loading looks good and the image of the ice hockey boot as the background of the board looks good. That's all I can say, the rest is a real let down. The animation is jerky at times and a little unresponsive. Very disappointing.

The sound is just as dire as the graphics. There is a sound when you are hitting the puck around and also when you score or concede but it's only these few effects which make up the game really. I would love to talk more about the sound but I can't really!

The controls are really really simple, which they should be. Use the D or key pad to move your paddle around left, right, up, down and diagonals. That's it, the centre button doesn't do anything. If the controls were more complicated then something would clearly be wrong. The paddle moves around very slowly and is quite difficult to control making the game annoying and bad at the same time.

The playability is poor. The game really does play like Pong and even though air hockey is this sort of a game the action should be fast and frantic. It isn't. You do get a choice of several modes and plenty of countries to choose from (I have no idea the UK was amongst the best in the world in air hockey) when playing but this doesn't compensate for the sub standard quality. Firstly the paddle has a heavy weight to it and isn't easy to move around, especially at speed. This makes defending quite difficult and attacking pretty impossible. The amount of times I conceded a goal at the start of the game because I couldn't get my paddle back in time was ridiculous. Also as the puck picks up speed, the game just becomes about blocking and hoping you manage to angle a shot towards the opponent's goal. I'm pretty good at air hockey in real life but the poor responsiveness of the controls really makes this game suffer.

The lastability is a non entity due to the playability. There are 3 modes so clearly there's a lot to do in the game but I couldn't bring myself to play the competitive ones after trying out the practice mode. The other modes would have some appeal if you decide to play them I suppose but for that you'll have to get good at the game, and for that you'll have to play it for long periods of time. Go on, I dare you.

It's been a while since I've said this but one to avoid.
