Fun driving game with nice graphics and the ability to tune your cars!

To give the game it's full title of 3D Autobahn Raser World Challenge would mean it would take me a week to write the review so I'm gonna call it 3DAR from now on.

There are a lot of driving games out there and some really stand out and others fail miserably. 3DAR leans more towards the former than the latter, but is by no means at the front of the race.

Like other driving games it has the ability to tune your car when you play the tournament mode. The difficulty with this is that in order to do this you need money and there ain't much of it to go around. If you manage to finish first in the race you get a reasonable amount but you really need to collect all the Euro icons (yep, this is a game from our European cousins, funny how we never think of ourselves as European if we're from the UK, methinks Mr Blair is failing his task) as well as finish first to really kit out your car. And this is a bit tricky as in order to finish first you need to have a decent car.

This is where the game scores for lastability. If you're a completist, and I'm sad enough to admit that I am, you're gonna have to play this game through a few times as when you finish it you unlock the special feature which I have to admit is pretty cool. There are the obligatory modes so you have tournament, single race and quick race. In single race it's weird that you can't load the car with the stats that you get in tournament mode and so all the cars you have a choice of have fairly low stats.

Speaking of the cars, both they and the backgrounds look very nice, some of the better looking graphics for a java driving game that I've seen. The 3D element gives the game a slightly superior look and feel to most 2D driving games and I suppose this is the reason that you don't get an in car view so you can see the nice shiny graphics. Backgrounds look great and have a lot of detail and the other cars, slopes, roadsigns and barriers etc look good. One thing for me though was that the other cars on the road are different colours so plenty of times I moved to the side they were on thinking they were speed ups or money and they turned out to be other cars which I had to hastily try and avoid.

The sound is decent too, a nice lower key polyphonic tune on loading and a more up tempo high tension racing tune in the game. There are no sound effects like tyres screeching etc but the tune does loop so you have some decent background music.

The controls are great as the game is very easy to play with the joystick on my SEK600. With the key pad you just use left and right to steer and the car autoaccelerates. It's pretty responsive and up or 2 will activate your speed boost. Down or 8 brakes. It's easy enough to control while holding it in one handed on a crowded central line train which has been delayed again due to someone leaving their bag unattended. Yes, it was a long journey home for me today.

One thing about this game is that you have to qualify in order to unlock the next course which basically means don't finish last. There are 3 other cars to overtake as well as the tons of traffic you encounter. When you are see another racer you can tell it's them as their number will be plastered above their car. Overtaking cars can be easy but be warned as if they touch you ever so slightly then you lose all speed instantly. The car is quite responsive although you have to be pretty accurate when trying to get the speed items. You also have a damage bar (which can easily be replenished by picking up the green spanners) that goes down for any type of collision. Once depleted it's restart time.

This game is pretty decent. It's not amazing or revolutionary by any stretch but it is well put together. It's a nice game. It has good graphics, decent sound. You can choose the colour of your car and try and upgrade it. There are courses to unlock. It has all the ingredients needed to be a great game. There are better games out there, but not that many so if you haven't done so yet, this may be worth a look.
