Bonk's back baby... Brilliant??

Bonk's returned to show us how much we love retro games and cannot wait for them to be ported onto the small screen. That's right isn't it? I'll admit that I missed Bonk the first time he visited so all retro nostalgia is wasted on this reviewer.

Mr Bonk (just Bonk to his friends) is a prehistoric man who likes nothing more than jumping from platform and vines using his overdeveloped jaw. Throughout the ages man has always had one weakness, woman, and Bonk is no different. An evil monster has captured his girl and Bonk must travel through 20 treacherous levels to rescue his love.

This platform game has plenty of variation but the controls aren't the easiest. Bonk can do all the usual moves but his only form of attack is the trusty headbutt. This is a game of limited lives and continues (it is after all a retro game) and timing the headbutts is critical. Unfortunately it is not easy to prance through the levels unscathed. There are lots of delicate jumps to navigate while avoiding deadly birds and it's pretty tough to complete the whole game.

The graphics are good with plenty of different backgrounds and enemies to contend with. While you may end up playing the same levels over and over and least you shouldn't get too bored of it all. To really improve the longevity Living Mobile have included a challenge mode which contains a few specially designed levels. They are competed against the clock and you will need accurate jumping and chomping skills to beat your opponent.

Bonk's Return comes from a well established publisher and while the individual elements would imply the game would rock, the total package didn't quite deliver for me. Maybe you need to be a fan of the original...
