Anannya Sen’s Review

Review Date: 01/11/07

A green bull on a broomstick. It must be Halloween.

Firstly I want to say that this review was supposed to be up yesterday. And it would have been but for our servers crashing on Halloween which was a horror story in itself. It also meant that the work I did when I got home was lost, but then you're not reading this to give me sympathy.

The reason I mention this is that this is a Halloween game, and of course yesterday was Halloween. So it would have made sense to have this review up were it not for our technical difficulties.

The game is a fun "action" game which is part of the popular Kukuxumusu (try saying that after a few pints) series that has other titles like Way, Farm and UFO. For those not in the know, it's a clothing and souvenir brand that started up in Spain (check out the wiki entry). All the mobile titles are animal related and it seems that Halloween has the original bull image as the main character. However, the bull seems to be green and is sporting a giant witches hat. Comedy.

The game is basically a new version of the previous UFO game, and for those unfamiliar with it, you fly around the screen collecting sheep. In this case though, you fly around the screen on a broomstick collecting children while avoiding sweets and stars. Yup, it's madness.

Graphics have a lot of colour to them, and while the kids you collect look like Bart Simpson's idiot cousin, you can't help but smile at the comedic nature of the imagery. The Frakenstein bulls wandering around are particularly amusing. The flying obstacles are also animated pretty well and fly at you from all angles. The sound has a few eerie tones to it but nothing too spectacular to speak of.

Controls are really simple as you use the stick or pad to control the broomstick. Using a stick to control a stick. Now that's funny. Press 5 or the main button to extend your claw. Don't worry it auto retracts. The movement of the broomstick definitely has a weight to it so while you zip around the screen, there's a certain level of interia you may feel. This is quite a nice touch.

The playability is excellent. At first glance, the game appears to be a ridiculously simple concept. Fly around and pick up the kids while avoiding the stuff whizzing about on screen. And at a second and third glance, it's still a ridiculously simple concept. But it's executed very very well. This may just be a rehash of the UFO game but with a different graphical skin, but I never played that so I'm just judging this on its own.

There are 5 stages with 4 levels on each. They start of simple but get a lot tougher. In addition to avoiding the flying obstacles, you have to avoid picking up Frankenstein bulls or you'll be slowed down for a time. There's a health bar as well for good measure and the levels themselves are pretty short. The thing is, the game is so addictive that you'll find yourself coming back to it again and again.

As each level gets tougher, you'll find yourself almost completing it, or convincing yourself you can do it and get to the next stage. The game has a load feature to start at the beginning of a stage and then you only have to clock 4 levels to unlock the next stage. Your life bar doesn't get replenished between levels, but you can collect hearts if you're smart. The game does have some tactical element to it (see the hints section) and with the short levels and addictive gameplay, I keep coming back to this again and again even if it's past Halloween.

The only annoying thing I have about the game is that there's no respite if you've been hit, i.e. you're still vulnerable after being knocked by a flying obstacle. On the harder levels, it can be very frustrating as you get hit once and then bounce around recovering getting hit again and before you know it you have to start again. That's why close control on the game is essential and practice makes perfect.

As the game is basically a new version of a previous game (UFO) which I haven't played, it gets a silver award for getting me hooked. If it was the original, it might have been a fair bit higher.
