The French are on the sauce again

I will always have a soft spot for the Asterix comics. Back in my younger days hanging out in the library, I was allowed one comic to take out together with a 'serious' book from the collection. Asterix was always my first choice mainly for the hilarity caused by my fat idol Obelix. After a couple of failed films (in the UK at least), Asterix & Obelix have landed on your mobile and you can help them in their Egyptian quest.

The game plays a little similar to Desperate Housewives and is played like a board game. Throw your die to move around the board to reach various buildings to let the story unfold, after winning a mini game. The board is filled with mystery and bogey squares and these usually involve a mini game to succeed.

The controls for the game mainly revolve around the Dpad and action button and the long on screen help explains each of the mini games. To complete the story throw the die to make your way to the flashing green marker and reveal the next part of the plot by completing the mini game. If you fail the mini game, you are generally transported back to the previous green marker and have to make your way back.

The graphics and animation come into their own during the mini games and cut scenes. The graphics of the characters are spot on to the originals, if not a little small. It's just a shame that the game doesn't make more use of the characters rather than having such a board centred game.

After the shock of the game style and the seemingly impossible mini games, Asterix & Cleopatra is pretty good fun to play. There are limited rolls of the dice and although bonus rolls are available, it can be difficult to reach the end before you run out of moves. The mini games take a little bit of time to master but try to win each section without losing lives to win up to 5 bonus rolls. There are about 10 mini games in total which are gradually unlocked for dedicated play in the 'quick game' mode.

Some of the games are great fun to play and all the main characters from the series show up at one time; even Dogmatix makes an appearance in a Qix clone. Completing the story mode will take an hour or so, assuming a perfect display, so feel free to multiply this fourfold to get a true idea of its length.
